Prawns are one of the important types of sea food variety in Kerala. The prawns grown in Pokkali fields are a rich source of Selenium, one of the most important antioxidants at maintaining healthy cells. They also contain high levels of Zinc, which is most important to develop a healthy immune system. When the salinity is high in the pokkali paddy fields, prawn farming takes over. The prawn seedlings that swim in from the sea and the backwaters after the rice harvest, feed on the leftovers of the harvested crop. Sluice gates are used to control the water flow to the fields. This system utilizes the symbolic relationship between rice and prawns. This is a natural system of cultivation which relies upon monsoons and sea tides. Rice residues form the feed for prawns and the excreta of prawns form the fertilizer for rice, which makes it ecologically stable and also reduces the input by maintaining a mutualistic approach. ● Storage condition- Keep away from direct sunlight and humid conditions.
